What to check before buying

The four things that most often change the price of broadcast licences after the first meeting.

  1. 1

    Licence term and renewal conditions

Read the format commitments as well as the expiry. A licence that obliges you to carry local news has a cost structure attached to it.

  2. 2

    Regulator approval to transfer

Most jurisdictions require the regulator to approve the change of control. Establish the timetable before agreeing a completion date.

  3. 3

    Transmitter site lease

The mast is rarely owned. Check the site lease, the power supply agreement and any shared-site costs.

  4. 4

    Music and staff liabilities

Collecting-society arrears and inherited employment contracts both transfer. Ask for the last two years of licence returns.

This is a starting checklist, not advice. Take your own legal and financial advice before signing anything.
